Workplace Injury, Product Defect & Wrongful Death - $2 Million Verdict

Settlement Amount: $2 Million Jury Verdict

Split-Ring Wheel Kills Bus Mechanic.

Lewis & Roberts represented the widow of a commercial truck mechanic who was killed when an improperly mounted and mismatched split-ring wheel suddenly exploded while he was working on the tire. The split-ring wheel was over 30 years old and had been installed on a used school bus that was sold without being properly inspected. We sued the company that sold the used bus. The bus company claimed that the mismatched split-ring wheel was not detectable during an inspection. The defendant offered only $150,000 prior to trial. Jim Roberts tried the case to a jury verdict in Johnston County. The jury returned a verdict in favor of our client for $2,000,000 – one of the largest wrongful death verdicts ever in Johnston County.

Jim Roberts was lead counsel for the plaintiff.
